Little Pip would rather fly than swim. And why not? After all, she is a bird, with wings and feathers and everything! The sky looks blue and bright, while the ocean seems dark and scary.
But even with a little help from her friends, Pip finds taking to the friendly skies is not as easy as she thought. Then Pip discovers that for penguins swimming is flying—in the water!

The idea for Don’t Be Afraid, Little Pip occurred to me while I watched a children’s nature program discussing why penguins can’t fly. I thought to myself, “What if a penguin wanted to fly rather than swim?” Fear of the unknown is such a natural part of childhood, and adulthood for that matter. Pip’s fear of the dark ocean water speaks to children who may fear going to school for the first time, meeting new people, or even learning to swim!
